Raise your hand if you thought I was pregnant.
I’m not.
The big news around here is . . .
We are officially horse owners.
This event was three years in the making, my friends. David told the girls they had to save up a certain amount of money before they could start looking for a horse. They met their goal this past spring. This summer we have spent many hours and MANY dollars building a fence and a barn.
And last weekend, David and the girls picked out a 14 year old paint mare named Rhubarb. And did I just sound smart right there? Throwing down words like “paint” and “mare?” I hope so. It was my goal to impress you.
Ask me not what a mare is.
I think paint refers to the color pattern. But really. I know nothing.
Who names a horse “Rhubarb?” I would vote for a fantastic name, such as Gladys. Or Ina Mae.
Anyways. The horse was prenamed. Such is life.
So now, the daily routine is the kids eagerly await for their patriarch to return home. When he arrives, he leads a Beginner Horsemanship class right in our very backyard.
Complete with popsicles. It is all very exciting.
What do you think will come next?
A second horse?
A cow?
A goat?
What say you?
What ever happened to Norma Jean Riley as a fantastic name?
I actually like rhubarb. As a food and as a horse name.
I vote that a goat will be next, and you will be milking it and making goat cheese, and friends will buy it from you to put atop fancy pizzas.
Norma Jean Riley is fantastic. I regret not including it in the above post.
If I get a goat, you can come and eat my fancy-pants pizza.
Deal. Just don’t make goat milk ice cream. Gag.
this is all so disappointing. I mean, the photo tipped me off but i was still hoping against hope for more little lumberjacks. You would totally rock that.
In other news, thanks for filling up my pinterest with your homeschool junk. It makes me feel lame, because all my kids have done all summer is watch cartoons. They know all of the disney theme songs. I’m calling it Music Appreciation 101.
Just kidding.
The horse is lovely. I like it’s name. I want a popsicle. OVer and out!
You’re welcome. I was wondering how many Pinterest followers I lost this weekend. ha
I have always wanted a llama so that I could name it Llama Bean. I too wondered how on earth you found the time to spend pinning so much on Pinterest…I inadvertently became edumacated during my summer vacation!
Well. I just took my massive board “Homeschool” and organized into smaller boards, such as “Homeschool Science,” “Homeschool Geography,” etc. This way I can find stuff easier. Hopefully. I am glad you became edumacated!
I was wondering how you could keep everything straight! There has to be a special place in Heaven for homeschool mothers…especially ones with four children in different age groups!
Oh a couple goats like Boer goats would be great. They eat what the horse won’t and they will stand on their back legs and clear your trees up to about 6 feet. We loved having our Boer goats they also eat poison ivy if you have any problems with that. You will want at least two since they don’t like being alone and I STRONGLY suggest again a Buck but the fixed males (wethers) or does are GREAT. They can be shown for 4-H as well. 🙂
Oh, man. I don’t know if I am ready for goats!!
Im definitely gonna go with either another horse or a goat. Its not good for horses to be alone, they need a companion, so it wont be long. But for your sake i hope its a goat. Hay is so expensive, we are spending a fortune on hay for ours! Hope your barn is filled! 🙂
I think we have 7 tons-ish of hay , Mindy Lou Hoo.
So glad I got to see my new great horse-niece. Rhubarb is perfect! She’s very pretty. My guess is a baby horse so kids can witness the miracle of birth in a large mammal. Don’t get a goat because it will eat the horse’s grass. How very exciting! How do the kids go to sleep at night now that they have a horse?
They are exhausted so it isn’t a problem. Girls wake up early to get dressed and get chores done so they can get outside.
You know, you can’t have just one horse. I speak from years of experience, not that I want to. Holla!
I have heard that, too. This is going to be pricey!
I love the name Rhubarb! I vote the next animal will be more pigs… But the next “wanted” animal will be a little pony friend for Rhubarb.
I haven’t posted at all in the last 9 months or so, because we bought our own farm and have been busy cleaning it up in anticipation of getting some animals. I already started with my “gateway” animal drug of chickens!
My son is only 2, but I was also admiring all your homeschool pins, so many ideas!
Chickens are pretty easy. I do not mind them and they are pleasant to watch.
Pigs on the other hand . . .
I like Rhubarb as a name. Hmmm…what’s next? How about a lumberjackling? Wait-TWO lumberjacklings because you need to keep it even : )
Yeah . . . No. Ha!
Congrats on your new addition, she’s precious! You say she’s 14; how old do horses get?
Not sure. 20 to 30 years?
My niece posted a couple of new pictures on Facebook today. She and my nephew are expecting baby #3 (yes, not yet 40, and I’ve been a great-aunt for 7 years)…their third boy. Both boys have rather unusual middle names, and the one picture my niece posted today was just a name.
I nearly snorted Dr Pepper through my nose when I saw it. (I say “nearly” because I hadn’t opened it yet.)
The first name is the unusual one for this baby (who’s due in October). And…it’s the same as one of our cats.
So I will now have a nephew who shares his name with the dominant feline queen of my house.
Granted, the name is, in Hawai’ian (which is where we got it from), a masculine name, but trust me, the cat doesn’t care, and it fits her. And, in all fairness, we pulled it out of a dictionary, not a website that could tell me it was a masculine adjective.
My husband thinks it’s cool.
My best friend and I are still giggling over it.
How funny! 🙂
I do not think I could take all the excitement that goes on at your house!! We are so boring! 🙂
She is a pretty horse.
We have our boring days,too!
Pretty paint! On the up side, when I was a teen I was so busy with horses, I didn’t have time to bother with boys…but one found me anyway, so I married him.
Sounds good to me!
